DESCRIPTION:Let’s explore sneaker culture in American history. The birth of collecting sneakers created what is now known as the sneakerhead culture in the US during the 1980’s with their introduction into sports and the growth of hip hop music. The emergence of Michael Jordan and his Air Jordan line of shoes released in 1985 started a boom of signature basketball shoes that provided the sheer variety necessary for a collecting subculture. Today\, the sneaker industry is valued around 80 billion dollars and industry titans include Nike\, Adidas\, Under Armor\, and New Balance. \nPresented by: Vincentt Sutton \nVincentt’s Why: The topic of history and culture are important because they are tools that can be used to show where mistakes were made but can be repaired. DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, we will explore materials\, techniques\, and finishing to use when making a collage. For materials\, we’ll look at different grades and types of paper\, adhesive/glue needed\, and tools like scissors and tweezers. For techniques\, we’ll look at layering and ripping vs cutting vs hole punching. For finishing\, we’ll look at glossy vs matte and spray vs brush.\nPresented by Dana Wilson \nDana’s Why: It’s important that we have outlets for our emotions and energy. Crafting of any kind is a form of meditation that fulfills your spirit’s need for creativity and imagination. I have paper crafted since I was a kid\, and I turn to it when I need to work through things in my mind. Allowing the creativity to be in charge frees up other areas of my brain that may need to calm or refocus.

The history of America has shaped our culture but our cultures and sub-cultures are going to help shape our future and shine light on our history. The topic of sneakers is important to me personally for the community and connections I have built because of them. There are also moments throughout history and media that have propelled brands and models to be iconic that pushed sneakers to the forefront of American culture and have grown to be considered mainstream culture with its own sense of economy.
